SONS OF GOD V (b)

In my previous post SONS OF V (a), we focused on the incarnation of Jesus the Son of God, reasons for his incarnation, the miracle of his incarnation and then the uniqueness of the human beingness of Jesus Christ. In this post, we shall try to draw down the curtains on Jesus, the Son of God by looking at the significance of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, the Son of God.

DEATH

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:16-17

When God spoke to Adam about death in the garden, He was very straight forward by spelling out specifically that on the very day Adam sinned, he was surely going to die. ‘But on the very day Adam ate the fruit, he didn’t die’ you may argue. But that will also mean that God lied. However, God does not lie.

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil?

Num 23:19 NIV

From our understanding that God does not lie, it will mean that He meant dying spiritually. Adam died physically at age 930. He lived that long but on the day of death he still wasn’t alive spiritually and that made him a slave of the Devil even in the life hereafter.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 NIV

The wages of sin is not physical death else the gift of God would have been long life. Long life is not necessarily eternal life. Eternal life is God’s life, Zoe, God’s essential nature.

Many people limit themselves to the physical death of Jesus on the cross anytime that subject comes up. If the root of man’s problem is spiritual then just the physical death of Jesus on the cross will not be enough to take care of it. The only thing that leads to spiritual death is sin. How was this sinless Jesus going to die spiritually? He was tempted at all points but did not sin. He could not have sinned because he had sinless blood, hence no sin nature in Him. He was so much alive in the spirit that Satan couldn’t have succeeded in deceiving Him. This was exactly what was available to Adam when he sinned. Adam was very much alive and alert in spirit that he could not have been deceived.

And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 1 Tim 2:14 NIV

So how did Jesus die spiritually?

God made him who had no sin to be sin a for us, so that in him, we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV

Isaiah 53 is a beautiful and most graphical portrait of how was made sin to slip into spiritual death.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6 NIV

… though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes c his life a guilt offering ... Isaiah 53:9-10 NIV

The iniquity of the human race was laid on Him, His life was made a guilt offering. It was at this point that the Father’s presence was withdrawn from Jesus on the cross. It was at this very point of Adam losing the presence of God that made him feel inferior, inadequate, naked, and fearful and ran to hide. Eternal life seized to flow through him, Adam began to feel an unfamiliar and yet strong Surlphric clenching stench over his spirit. This was the code of spiritual death placed as a seal over him forever.

Jesus, in a very similar condition, begins to feel his emptiness and nakedness at the withdrawal of the Father’s presence and screams out:

About the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi,  lamasabachthani?"-which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Matt 27:46

Jesus the forsaken Son of God in this condition, steps down from immortality to mortality where ageing and physical death is activated. Once Jesus was separated from the Father physical death became a reality for Him.

The Jews, therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. John 19:31-35

CONFIRMATIONS OF HIS DEATH

His legs were not broken like the rest

The blood and water that poured from His side.

At least these two should settle the arguments of those who reject the resurrection on the sole premise that Jesus did not actually die.

BURIAL

Physical death brought about the separation of the body and the spirit. In the burial of Jesus, His body had to be kept safe from any form of mutilation and possible decomposition through embalmment.

And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight.

Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

There laid they, Jesus, therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. John 19:38-42

But the matter of focus at this juncture is what really took place during the three days of burial.

Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. Acts 2:23-24

And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Colossians 1:18

FIRSTBORN FROM THE DEAD

Was Jesus the first person ever to have risen from the dead from the beginning of creation? NO. Throughout scriptural records we see ten people dying and coming back to life again by the power of God: Widow of Zarephath's Son (1 King 17:17-24), Shunammite Woman's Son (2 Kings 4:18-37), Israelite Man (2 Kings 13:20–21), Widow of Nain's Son (Luke 7:11–17 Luke 8:49–56), Lazarus (John 11:1-44), Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:1-20; Mark 16:1-20; Luke 24:1-49; John 20:1-21:25), Saints in Jerusalem (Matthew 27:50-54), Tabitha or Dorcas (Acts 9:36-42) and Eutychus (Acts 20:7–12). So we know at least that Jesus was not the first. So why is He referred to as the first born from the dead? Jesus was the first person to have come out of spiritual death. The sin that brought Him spiritual death was taken off Him justified in the Spirit…

This was the beginning of the new creation

1Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

The first man Adam was made a living soul - old creation

The last Adam was made a quickening spirit – new creation

This is why we all must be born again, to translate us from the old creation, Adam into the new creation, Christ Jesus.

If you haven’t really met Him personally, or have been living life contrary to Him, I think it’s time for you to reconsider Him. I humbly invite you to Please pray this sincere prayer out now:

‘Lord Jesus, I come to you today for I now see you for whom you really are. I am a sinner, I cannot help myself. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with your precious blood. Deliver me from sin and Satan, to serve the living God. Today, Lord Jesus, I accept you as my Lord and my Saviour. Thank you for saving me! Now I know, I am born again!’

If you have prayed this prayer in faith, you are born again, saved, a child of God.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the sons of God, even to them, that believe on his name

1John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. As simple as it may seem to you, you are saved or born again by this prayer of faith. You have been restored to sonship. Get a bible if you don’t have one yet and start reading it for yourself. May the Holy Spirit also be your guide.

SONS OF GOD V (a)

In my previous post SONS OF GOD IV, we focused on the incarnation of Jesus the Son of God, reasons for his incarnation, the miracle of his incarnation and then the uniqueness of the human beingness of Jesus Christ. In this post, we shall try to draw down the curtains on Jesus, the Son of God by looking at the significance of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, the Son of God.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29 NIV

At the very beginning of Jesus’ public life, prophet John De Baptist, whose birth, life and mission were to prepare the way of the lord, introduces him to the world as the Lamb of God with the ultimate mission of taking away the sin of the world. The focus of Jesus’ mission was not the sins of the world but the sin. The sin that we are looking at is the taproot of all other personal sins. The sin Adam committed brought spiritual death on the entire human race. When that foundation laid by Adam I, is destroyed, then the absolute power of mastery Satan holds over the entire human race will come to an end and then each human being will be left with the choice of whom he will submit to.

Was Jesus born to die? Absolutely yes! The purpose of the incarnation of Jesus was death, not just physical death but the ultimate death, spiritual death.

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death — that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. Heb 2:14-15 NIV

For God to redeem (buy back) man, He had to identify completely with man.

Man was human (humus + man: clay + spirit), God had to become human

ADAM: Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man's nostrils, and the man became a living person. Genesis 2:7

JESUS: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1-2, 14 NIV

Man sinned; Jesus couldn’t sin but was made sin on our behalf (not made to)

ADAM: So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate. Genesis 3:6 RSV

JESUS: For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Heb 4:15-16 NASU

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV

Adam died spiritually on the very day he sinned, Jesus died spiritually the very day he was sin

ADAM: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die." Genesis 2:17 RSV

JESUS: About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi,  lamasabachthani?"-which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Matt 27:46

THE AGONY OF FORSAKEN SON OF GOD

Adam died physically years later and Jesus died physically too a few hours later

ADAM: Thus all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died. Genesis 5:5RSV

JESUS: And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.  Matt 27:50 NKJV

Don’t get confused. Jesus had a mission to accomplish when he came on earth as the Son of God. Everything Jesus did prior to His betrayal and going to the cross was to show to man what God had intended for the creation of the human race.

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12

As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. John 9:5

Having mentioned that, let’s not lose track of His mission: to get to the very chamber of hell and break that slavery code of spiritual death over the whole of creation. This code was what prevented any human being from accessing and walking in eternal life, God’s very kind of life, Zoe. There were no other legal means of getting there except to use the very means that all humans who got there used: spiritual death followed by physical death. Anyone who ever went to hell or shall ever go to hell must, by divine requirement, be spiritually dead at the point of departing from this world. Jesus had to fulfil this in order to have an audience with that old Traitor angel, the one who caused mayhem in heaven 1000s of years ago and who has also succeeded in disconnecting the whole earth and its inhabitants from its original government. Jesus had come to confront the rebel leader and take back this colony of heaven and her citizens to Himself.

Really, if Satan had known this fact of Jesus’ coming, he wouldn’t have laid a finger on Him.

None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 1 Corinthians 2:8-9 NIV

And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Colossians 2:15

The death of Jesus, the Son of God is what actually begins our redemption process. I really need you to take time to digest what you have read before we consider the death of Jesus proper in my next post.

If you haven’t really met Him personally, or have been living a life contrary to Him, I think it’s time for you to reconsider Him. I humbly invite you to Please pray this sincere prayer out now:
