OFFENCES I

“Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!” Luke 17:1.

Christ teaches that offences are a normal part of our daily life in this world, but he also forewarns those through whom offences come. If you are at the receiving end of an offence, Jesus says to you, ‘take heart’ but if you are the offender, he says to you, ‘woe to you’. Apart from this post on offences, I shall deal with its related matters in my next two posts: unforgiveness and bitterness.

DEFINITION

An offence is an act of upsetting and hurting feelings. It is causing an annoyance in another because of showing rudeness or lack of respect for another. An offence, in relating to a crime, is breaking or going against law or principle. We can say then that offence is going against certain personal laws or principles people hold dearly. For instance, people may feel offended or violated when you disregard by intruding on their privacy uninvited, betraying their trust by revealing a secret they hold dearly, not returning a favour owed them in their most crucial moments, et cetera.

TYPES OF OFFENCE

PERCEIVED OFFENCE

Perceived offences are the upsets and hurt feelings we experience when we try to interpret and judge the unseen motives of other people’s actions towards us. The motives or motivations for people’s actions are best known to them. I have learnt by experience that when we give others the opportunity to explain themselves, we’ll become better judges. You may have so much hurt in your heart now because of an interpretation you have assigned to the motive behind an action of a loved one. What if you are not completely right? Don’t you think it’s unfair to the other person for not listening to his side of the matter? Besides, you have imprisoned yourself by this hurt feelings and even the perceived offender does not know.

You can become offended by an usher’s direction, a pastor’s sermon, another person’s dressing, a friend’s chuckle, the whisperings of two people or even this post you are reading. In soliciting for funds to publish my 1st book ‘SEASONAL DYNAMICS’, many years ago, a friend busted out in anger, saying, “I know you used my life circumstances to write your book.” These will happen as long as you keep reading meanings into the motives of the surrounding people.

REAL OFFENCE

Real offences are the hurt feelings resulting from the negative physical or emotional actions people carry out towards us. Years ago, I was ironing my clothes in the common hall of my dormitory in the secondary school. In a split moment, after hearing the footsteps of someone walking into the hall, I felt the two palms of the stranger cover both eyes of mine. Of course, this is something best friends or lovers do. After your friend blindfolds you, you should be able to guess who it is. Your right guess showed how connected and sensitive you were to each other.

So, this stranger-friend of mine still had his palms over my eyes, waiting for my right guess. Unfortunately for me, I suffocated as this stranger-friend also has both palms over my eyes and nose. At a point, to save my life, I gathered every ounce of strength within me and gave this stranger-friend a ‘wicked’ push off my back. He fell heavily and upon turning I saw who it was. He was just a friend, but a very close friend. I was sorry, but I was more offended at his attempt to suffocate me. He was also sorry, but I believe he was also more offended at my ‘wicked’ push. That was it! Our relationship became cold and even colder until we completed our senior high school education.

Several years later, after school, our paths crossed again and we are good friends again till today.

ABSALOM WAS OFFENDED

Absalom, King David’s 1st son, who would have become the next king of Israel after his father David, had a sister called Tamar. This Tamar was sexually violated by one of her step-brothers, Amnon. This incident angered Absalom. To make matters worse, King David, their father, slept on the matter. (What could he have done? He was the father of them all and the harm had already been caused). But Absalom’s hurt feelings kept on raging until it developed into hatred for Amnon, his step-brother, leading to his cold blood murder. That initial hurt that wasn’t dealt with led to murder, then to betrayal, open rebellion, incest and finally, self-destruction. 2Samuel 13-20

SIGNS THAT YOU ARE HABOURING AN OFFENCE

The majority of people will deny and even try to cover up their hurt feelings to portray that they are psychologically and emotionally in charge. But the signs are always obvious.

Withdrawal or isolation from others

Change in personality

Display of anger, anxiety, or moodiness

Feeling of worthlessness

Hatred

Distrust

Absent-mindedness and periodic deep sighing

Betrayal

Open rebellion

Perfect memory and constant recounting of hurts with passion to anyone who would listen

Even though offences are a normal part of our lives, harbouring an offence can be more destructive to you than the real cause of the offence. You must deal with any feeling of hurt in your heart before it deals a deadly blow on your destiny. To err, they say, is human but to forgive, divine. We all require divine enablement to forgive our offenders. Submitting your life to Jesus will equip you to let go past hurt feelings.

Pray this prayer with me

Father, I come to you today just as I am, I have found my greatest challenge today i.e. I have no right standing with you because of the condemnation that passed unto all human beings. Save me as I open my heart and accept Jesus today as my Lord and Saviour. Thank you for saving me and giving a right standing in your presence today. Amen.

As simple as it may seem to you, you are saved or born again by this prayer of faith. You have been restored to your right place before God. Get a bible if you don’t have one yet and start reading it for yourself. May the Holy Spirit also be your guide.

In my subsequent blogging, I shall be taking you a step further in overcoming unforgiveness.

A STRONG HUMAN SPIRIT

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel. Luke 1:80

John DeBaptist had a very strong spirit.

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. Luke 2:40

Jesus Christ also had a very strong spirit.

Possessing a very strong human spirit is so crucial to the believer if he will be able to home the eternal Spirit of God, for the benefit of our entire generation like John and Jesus did. When the Holy Spirit came to live in you on the very day you believed in Jesus and simultaneously made righteous, He came with every bit of His presence, power, glory and all that you can think of. However, we don’t get to see or experience such mighty manifestation of the Holy Spirit through us. Why? Our capacity, spiritual capacity is what determines how much of him we are able to manifest.

He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

John 7:38-39

The wells of living water refer to the Holy Spirit. The mighty Holy Spirit shall flow out of your human spirit (belly) to bless others. How much of the Holy Spirit flows through you depends on the capacity or strength of your spirit. This is why it's very necessary to build spiritual strength or capacity.

A strong human spirit is an asset in your spiritual journey.

In this post, we shall look at just one scriptural means of developing a very strong spirit in order to become a conducive channel for the Holy Spirit to manifest all He is without breaking you down.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

1Corinthians 14:4,14

TONGUES: A MEANS OF BUILDING UP YOUR SPIRIT

Speaking in tongues is your spirit speaking directly to God, the Father of all spirits, by the utterance that the Holy Spirit gives (Acts 2:4).

The Greek word for the word edify, ‘oikodomew’ means: to be a house-builder, i.e. construct or (figuratively) confirm: --(be in) build (-er, -ing, up), embolden. So, speaking in tongues is what builds up, constructs, confirms or emboldens your spirit.

In comparing you to the tabernacle in the Old Testament, your body is the outer court, your soul is the holy place and your spirit is the holy of holies where God’s presence was. The Holy Spirit definitely dwells in your holy of holies. When you pray in tongues not just once in a while, but every day of your life, you are ‘oikodomewing’: building, constructing, confirming and emboldening your holy of holies, the human spirit.

Truly, any time I spend time praying in the spirit, I become so much emboldened in my spirit so much that it becomes impossible to conceal my outward confidence.

I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all. 1Corinthians 14:18

Hear this bold declaration of one secret of this spiritual giant. It is very possible that this secret could account for the great feats he accomplished to the glory of God throughout his ministry. You know, there is so much benefit in speaking in tongues aside from building your spirit as we are discussing in this post.

But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost. Jude 1:20

There we have it again, building up yourself by praying in the Holy Spirit. Whenever you pray in the spirit, know that you are developing your spirit to become like John and Jesus who waxed strong in spirit.

Smith Wigglesworth lived 1Corinthians 14:4 and Jude 20

Kenneth Hagin prayed much of his private payers in tongue because of 1Corinthians 14:4 and Jude 20

'The greatest gift God gave to the world is His son. the greatest gift Jesus gave to the Church is the Holy Spirit and the greatest gift the Holy Spirit has given is your spiritual language (speaking in tongues)' Dr. Bill Hamon (Click on the links to watch their YouTube videos.)

It is obvious that speaking in tongues more of the time was a major price these spiritual giants paid to generate such transgenerational impact they’ve had over the human race throughout their ministries. If you will begin to cultivate this same prayer life as they did, God’s faithfulness will ensure that you don’t bear fewer fruits in your lifetime.

It all begins with salvation in Christ Jesus. If you have not yet committed your life personally to Jesus, may I give you the opportunity to do so now.

Pray this prayer out:

‘Lord Jesus, I come to you today. I am a sinner, I cannot help myself. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with your precious blood. Deliver me from sin and Satan, to serve the living God. Today, Lord Jesus, I accept you as my Lord and my Saviour. Thank you for saving me! Now I know, I am born again!’

If you have prayed this prayer in faith, you are born again, saved, a child of God.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name John 1:12

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 1John 3:1

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10

And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts 16:31

THE HUMAN SPIRIT

Our walk and reliance upon the Holy Spirit will be better enhanced when we understand who we are as spirits.

You as a human being are a spirit, you have a soul and you live in a body. God is a Spirit (John 4:24). As a spirit, He is invisible (cannot be contacted through the five senses) but as real as anything that can be contacted by the five senses.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 1:26-27 ¶

When He intended to make man in His image and likeness, He meant that man was also going to be real but invisible (cannot be contacted through the five senses). His desire was to give to the man He was creating, dominion over all the earth (physical). His domain of authority was well defined: the visible realm. The man was invisible but was coming to do business in the visible. So, God in His wisdom formed a physical (visible) body for the invisible man.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7

 Human: humus + man

 Human: earth + spirit

 Human: visible + invisible

After God formed the physical body for man (spirit), He placed the spirit that was a replica of Himself into the body. It was the coming together of the spirit and body that the soul came into existence. Without the soul, no unity can be achieved between the spirit and the body.

YOU ARE A SPIRIT. You are invisible to the five senses. If you had no physical body, no one would have been able to see you and make contact with you except in the spiritual realm. YOU HAVE A SOUL. YOU DWELL IN THE BODY LIKE A HOUSE.

An armor lays lifeless until a soldier puts it on. We may look at the arm of the armor raised but that is because the wearer raised the arm. Your physical body carries life and remains active until the tie between your spirit and soul is untied. Remember this: the real you is not your body but your spirit.

UNITY AMONG SPIRIT, SOUL & BODY

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

As important and distinct as each component of your existence is, they overlap in such close ties that only the Word of God has the ability to clearly distinguish them in composition and functions.

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly. Proverbs 20:27

Your spirit is God's means of reaching out to you.

But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. Job 32:8
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly, and I pray God, your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1Thessanonians 5:23

Your spirit is God's primary point of contact with you.

OTHER NAMES REFERRING TO YOUR SPIRIT:

 Hidden man

But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
1Peter 3:4

 Inward man

For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. 2Corinthians 4:16

 Old man

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Romans 6:6 Ephesians 4:22, Colossians 3:9

 New man

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephesians 4:24, Colossians 3:10

FEATURES OF THE REAL YOU (SPIRIT)

 Eternal

Spirits do not go extinct, they don’t stop existing. All those who have died have simply transited by breaking the tie with their physical body and are very much alive in the spiritual world. It is this characteristic of spirits that gives relevance to the Lake of Fire. It is going to be the permanent place of incarceration for those who during their lifetime on earth, lived in contravention to the directives of God.

 Very religious

It is your spirit that was made in the image and likeness of God and therefore always seek to satisfy that longing desire. It is this driving force in your spirit that moves you into all kinds of spiritualisms. However, it is only in Christ that this thirst is satisfied.

Can be influenced by God or Satan.

God is spirit, Satan is spirit and angels are spirits. Amazingly, you are also a spirit, roaming in the same realm with these forces all battling to have an influence over you. You have what it takes to determine who influences you: the power of your choice.

Nothing regulates it more than words.

In the realm of the spirit, there is no greater influence like words. Words determine everything. The kind of words you give yourself to hearing constantly will determine the direction of your life. It can open the door of faith and shut the door against fear

 Can be educated and trained.

Make time with the Word of God. When revelation knowledge of the Word takes over your spirit, then your spirit, in turn, will take over your five senses. It is at this point that your judgement and perception of issues change. Read the whole Bible, but dwell more in the New Testament and the Epistles are actually letters written to the church. It is in them you will discover God's plan of redemption. Meditate on these things because they take you on a lifelong journey of renewing your mind.

The condition of your spirit will determine the happenings in your life.

THE UNPARDONABLE SIN

In our previous post, DON’T HURT YOUR HELPER (SINS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT), we dealt with the two types of sins we commit against the Holy Spirit and how to avoid them. In this post, I shall be dealing with the third category of sins committed against the Holy Spirit: blasphemy, which Jesus described as unpardonable.

"Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come." Matthew 12:31-32

Even though Jesus forgives our sins no matter how bad it might seem and his blood is able to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, He clearly states that blaspheming against the Holy Spirit is the sin unto death and also the unpardonable sin, both in this age and the age to come. That is a serious matter. Anyone who becomes a victim of this sin is doomed for all eternity. Is it possible you might have committed that sin or may fall into it one day?

NOT ALL SINS ARE BLASPHEMY

You need to understand that it isn't every sin we commit against the Holy Spirit that is unforgivable even though they also give Satan an advantage over us and deny us the manifest presence and power of the Holy Spirit leading to our victorious walk in Christ. We must immediately confess and receive forgiveness the moment we become aware of it.

"If any man sees his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death." 1John 5:16 -17

The fact that fornication, adultery, idolatry, murder and the likes may not be the sins unto death does not imply that we are free to continue committing those acts, because, they are still unrighteousness and they have devastating effects upon the believer who allows them in his or her life. But there is the reality of the unforgivable sin: blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

WHAT IS BLASPHEMY?

From the Greek translation of the Bible, to blaspheme means: to vilify; especially, to speak impiously, defame, rail on, revile, speak evil.

"For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins." Hebrews 10:26

Those who know so much about God and yet refuse to submit their life to Him are at the highest risk of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit. Anyone who just keeps hearing without taking the necessary steps of obedience, particularly with regards to salvation, will eventually become hardened.

While it is said, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. Hebrews 3:15

"It is a persistent, habitual, willful continuing in sin, against better knowledge. It is a persistent, habitual and willful neglect of the Spirit of God and living contrary to the commands of God … it consists of a complete rejection of the way of salvation in Jesus Christ." RICHARD J. VENEMA

So an ignorant unbeliever who has not heard of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ cannot blaspheme against the Holy Spirit. This is because background of adequate and right knowledge is required to make an act qualify as blasphemy.

CAN A BELIEVER IN CHRIST JESUS BLASPHEME AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT?

When one becomes saved the following take place,

1. He's made a child of God

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name John 1:12

2. He becomes one spirit with Christ

But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. 1Corinthians 6:17

3. He is sealed with the Holy Spirit

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise. Ephesians 1:13

4. He is accepted in the beloved

To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. Ephesians 1:6

5. His name is written in the book of life

Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. Luke 10:20

To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect. Hebrews 12:23

6. All his sins are forgiven him

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Act 26:18

7. He has become a new creature

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2Corinthians 5:17

8. He has also become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

9. He is made to sit with Christ in heavenly places

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus Ephesians 2:6

10. He is hidden with Christ in God

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. Colossians 3:3

The list is endless

Now what will happen to all these things above when he commits that sin that cannot be forgiven in this life and the next? You see, it is impossible for a child of God to commit the unpardonable sin. Any sin a believer commits can be placed under grieving or quenching the spirit which also has consequences.

"Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost." 1Corinthians 12:3

In Him, you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:13-14 NKJV

Our coming to accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and saviour and remaining in Him heavily depends on the work of the Holy Spirit.

In reality, the actual sin that leads to eternal condemnation and eternal separation from God is the rejection of Christ and His finished work on the cross. The Holy Spirit is the only divine agent by whom we come to accept Christ's perfect sacrifice for our sins, it is by Him, the Spirit of grace, we access the saving grace that leads us to acknowledging Jesus as Lord. Blaspheming against the Holy Spirit, therefore, shuts the one who does it out of access to the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

It is impossible for a genuine believer to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit.

The difficulty we might have in accepting this has been occasioned by the fact that, at every point in time among believers, we have those who crept into the church (Jude 1:4) instead of being born into (John 3:3,5,7), the flock and the wolves in sheep clothing (Matthew 7:15)

But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; how that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These are they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. Jude 1:17-19

A believer can and does fall but a believer cannot and does not fall away.

A believer can and does sin and there are consequences but a believer cannot and does not commit the sin onto death.

A believer can and does sin against the Holy Spirit: grieving and quenching (he should not because it gives the enemy an advantage over you) but a believer cannot and does blaspheme against the Holy Spirit.

God has a recovery plan for the believer who sins (1John 1:9, 1John 2:1) but not for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

What of someone you knew and can testify personally that he/ she was a genuine believer? Well, the scripture has this to say:

They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 1John 2:19

If you still cannot accept this scripture, then, judge nothing before its time and keep praying for such individuals, if the Lord restores them before they die physically, then you'll know they were not victims of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

HOW TO AVOID THIS UNPARDONABLE SIN

Make sure your walk with God is genuine. Don’t pretend, don’t be a wolf in sheep's clothing, be sincere with God. Have you come to salvation? I mean have you given your life to Jesus by yourself with nothing standing in-between you? If you have done so already, then, help another by sharing this link with as many contacts as you have. You might never know who will receive help by your kind action.

Let me give you that opportunity to come to Christ if you have not yet done so. Pray this prayer out now:

Acts 16:31

If you will spend the rest of your days listening and speaking with God by studying the Bible and praying, then your friendship with Christ shall become permanent and intimate.

Let me also encourage you to start reading the bible for yourself. Start by patiently reading the Gospel of John.

DON’T HURT YOUR HELPER (SINS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT)

NO ONE FIGHTS THE HOLY SPIRIT AND WINS

In the natural, people are very careful when relating with someone they consider as a helper, supporter or sponsor. No person in his right mind would like to be on the wrong side of his helper. Believers have a Helper whose sole purpose is to help them to live victoriously in all things that pertain to life and godliness.

There is the person, presence and power of the Holy Spirit. As a believer, the Holy Spirit lives permanently in you, but access to His manifest presence and power requires that you avail yourself to Him consistently on a daily basis and in a personal way. When you commit these sins against Him, you don’t lose His person you deny yourself of enjoying the fullness of His presence and power which are responsible for the unfair advantages you have over unbelievers.

There are three main sins committed against the Holy Spirit: quenching the Spirit, grieving the Spirit and blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, two of which are committed by believers. In this post, I shall deal with the first two sins and the last one in my next post and show you how that constitutes the unpardonable sin.

QUENCHING THE HOLY SPIRIT

DON'T SAY NO! TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

"Do not quench the Spirit." 1Thessalonians 5:19

To quench means to put off or put out a fire. When the Holy Spirit is causing a stir in you to do something and you suppress that initiative due to fear, shyness, procrastination, disbelief or blatant disobedience, you are quenching the Holy Spirit. Quenching the Spirit really has to do with resisting the things the Spirit tries to initiate within you. Disobeying the promptings of the Holy Spirit quenches Him. You know, the only physical body the Holy Spirit has is your physical body since He dwells in your spirit which also dwells in your body.

Whenever He seeks to do a thing, He will first and foremost initiate it within your spirit which may be likened to a flickering flame of fire. When this flicker is cared for very well, it burns until it sets your heart or spirit ablaze. Most times, when you put out this fire immediately it starts at the flicker level, you quench the Holy Spirit. This happens when you are careless and remain adamant to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Refusing to do what he tells you to do is quenching the Spirit.

Refraining from His embrace is quenching Him.

When you refuse His DO! BE! HAVE! commands, you quench him.

How to avoid quenching the Holy Spirit

1. Learn to recognize Him and His promptings

2. Follow His prompts promptly

3. Consider the streams of far-reaching opportunities you are missing by refusing what He initiates in you.

GRIEVING THE HOLY SPIRIT.

DON'T TURN DEATH EARS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

"And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice." Ephesians 4:30-31

This entails all the things you do that grieves Him. How can the mighty Holy Spirit be grieved, you may wonder? The Holy Spirit has emotions and a bit emotional than that of Jesus. What Jesus will overlook and simply brush off, the Holy Spirit won't easily give it a pass. When Jesus said in John 14:16: "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever", he didn’t mean he was going to pray like we do, but rather, request or plead strongly and passionately. The word 'pray' as Jesus used it, carried with it a picture of the Father holding on so strongly to and not really willing to let go of the Holy Spirit because of the emotional complexes of the Holy Spirit; He easily gets hurt. I say it this way due to the inability of the human language to give full and accurate expressions to divine truths. The Holy Spirit is another comforter like Jesus but different from Jesus in a number of ways.

Continuing to do what He is stopping you from doing is grieving the Spirit. Embracing what He refrains from grieves Him. When we embrace His DO NOT! BE NOT! HAVE NOT! commands, we grieve him.

BITTERNESS

WRATH

ANGER

CLAMOR

EVIL SPEAKING

MALICE

ET CETERA ...

Do you remember the Spirit's first encounter in the New Testament with liars (Ananias & Sapphira) in the church? Instant death! Jesus also forewarns that blasphemy against the Father or the Son is forgivable but none should try that with the Holy Spirit.

How to avoid grieving the Holy Spirit

1. Accept and convinced yourself that the Holy Spirit has your best interest at heart

2. Know also that no scriptural instruction has been written to take advantage of you. Every scriptural injunction is designed for your advantage

3. Your power and uniqueness in life are in your obedience to the voice of the Spirit.

Receive grace to walk with the Holy Spirit.

THE HOLY SPIRIT: YOUR COMFORTER (AUDIO)

THE HOLY SPIRIT: YOUR COMFORTER

 A LONELY ORPHAN BOY

"I will not leave you comfortless' (KJV)
"I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you". (NKJV)

 John 14:18

‘I will not leave you as orphans', were the very words of Jesus to his disciples. An orphan? Who is an orphan? An orphan is one deprived of father and mother. This situation makes him be lowly esteemed, neglected, destitute of comfort, direction, and support and is left to wander about in obscurity and darkness, increasing his vulnerability to situations and circumstances. Unfortunately, we have others who have not lost their parents physically and yet in similar or worse condition.

Anyone who has personally encountered Jesus, anyone who is born again, one who has been taken out of the kingdom of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God, without the conscious presence of the Holy Spirit will live like an orphan.

But Jesus says that we don’t have to live like orphans because everything an orphan will need in life can all be summed up in one word: comfort. A comforter’s purpose is to make life comfortable and bearable for his beneficiary.

Will you live as an orphan or a royal? The choice is yours. Embrace the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit, your comforter.

4 THINGS HE WILL DO TO COMFORT YOU

 1. He will teach you all things.
THE TEACHING MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you". John 14:26

You only do well in the areas of life that you have been taught. There are very successful business people who fail woefully in family life and the reverse is true. You can be working in a bank and still be financially suffocating. Samuel was a successful prophet of God, but his family life was nothing to write home about. It is a known fact that we can only do well in the areas of our lives we have exposed to proper teachings. I know there are many public successful people who are abject failures in private. The Holy Spirit wants to shed his eternal light into every area of your life, will you welcome him today? A true teaching is a component of a comfortable life. A well-taught person will walk in various dimensions of liberty. For the Holy Spirit to fulfil his comforting role in the life of believers, he seeks to teach us ALL THINGS. The Holy Spirit will teach you everything and anything you are willing to open up to him.

The Holy Spirit teaches you through others, but he can and does teach you directly. He passionately wants to have personal moments with you. He does not teach theological confusions that have no beneficial bearings upon your life. He teaches the bible but he teaches ALL THINGS that are beneficial to you too. He taught me how to deal with a particular challenge in stew preparation. That’s humorous, isn’t it? But it’s true. He has taught me several things over the years, but he desires to teach you and me ALL THINGS if only we will open up every area of our lives to him.

 2. He will remind you of the things you know but have forgotten.
THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL REMIND YOU

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you". John 14:26

Remembrance of important things brings comfort to your life. You will be miserable in life if don’t remember all the important things you’ve been told over the years. If knowledge is power, then forgetfulness is a loss of power. Remembrance of the things Jesus has taught us is so crucial to your comfortable life that the mighty Holy Spirit is tasked with the responsibility of reminding you. If you will rely on him, then he will boost your memory, your recollecting ability.

 3. He will guide you.
THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL GUIDE YOU

"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come". John 16:13

The guidance of the Holy Spirit is another relevant branch of the comforting ministry of the Holy Spirit. His guidance is his protective shield over you. Just as prevention is better than cure, let me say that protection is better than deliverance. You are better off as a believer, avoiding a harmful situation than falling into it to be delivered afterwards. Listen to the Holy Spirit when he guides you. Within the words of the Holy Spirit to you are the keys to your success, protection, fulfilment, growth, comfort and all he desires for you. You may never be cast into a lion’s den all your life, but heeding to his direction completely avoids all the snares and entrapments of the enemy ahead of your life. He wants to guide you to whom to marry, partner within the business and even the congregation to fellowship with. You know, the Holy Spirit is more interested in your wellbeing than you can ever be in yourself. Listen to him.

 4. He will show you things to come.
THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL SHOW YOU THE FUTURE

"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come". John 16:13

Finally, comfort resulting from hopefulness is a result of the future you have foreseen. Jesus said the Holy Spirit will show you things to come. We have already dealt with the fact that the Holy Spirit will teach us all things. So this showing part has to do with sight. In the book, man’s search for meaning by Viktor Frankl, I understood that it is the picture of possibility that a man holds within himself that empowers him to endure all kinds of unforeseen hardships of life. Even Jesus endured the cross and despised the shame because of the spiritual picture he carried in his mind.

Your level of comfort in life is largely determined by your hope. What you see builds your hope and that is why among other things, the Holy Spirit will show you things to come. When you depend on the Holy Spirit, you’ll have an unfair advantage over the unbeliever and even the believer who will not rely or wait on him. Life can be truly simple for you. Yes, if you can invest even 30 per cent of your labour towards achievements in life into developing a personal and intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit, you’ll become a reference point among human beings in your generation and beyond.

Accept the Holy Spirit today just as a sinner receives Jesus as his Lord and personal saviour.

 Remain blessed.

NEW AUDIO BOOK BEWARE OF FOOLS IS OUT

THE HOLY SPIRIT

1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

7 ¶ Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

John 16:1-7

MORE BENEFITS FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT

Jesus the Son of God, had been a rock of courage, comfort and all that a disciple will need. For 3 years and six months, he’s groomed them, walked with them, encouraged and supported them. Now He is about to return to where He came from. The disciples were not just shocked but sad. They even became fearful considering the jealousy and hatred the people in authority had for their master, what will happen to His disciples after he leaves them.

But Jesus, the great and exemplary leader begins to allay their fearfulness and sorrow. He tells them:‘It is more beneficial for you that I go away'. It will be more profitable to the disciples if Jesus left the scene. Why? Jesus declares the reason: ‘for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you’.

This kept the disciples wondering, the Comforter? But was Jesus not the only comforter they knew and wanted? Did He mean that their spiritual lives will be better enhances in His departing from them physically? Can we stretch this to mean that those who will become Christians after the physical departure of Jesus will be at an advantage over those who experienced Him physically?

It is expedient for you that I go away...

It is advantageous for you that I go away...

It is beneficial for you that I go away...

It is useful for you that I go away...

It is better for you that I go away...

It is profitable for you that I go away...

Years ago, a certain lady had some health challenges. We prayed for her, prayed with her and kept encouraging her. One day when I visited her and prayed with her, she started sobbing and declared: ‘Oh, how I wished I lived during the times when Jesus walked physically on the earth’. I was shocked but interested in that, so I asked, why do you wish to be in those times? She said, ‘oh, like the woman with the issue of blood who touched the hem of Jesus’ garment and got healed, I also will meet Jesus face-to-face and just by one touch, this my health challenge will disappear’.it sounded nice and spiritual but was a badge of ignorance and a direct affront to what Jesus declared. Usually, our mindsets harm or hurt us more than any physical condition. Jesus believes His prolonged stay with the disciples was inhibiting their access to a certain dimension of a spiritual experience with the Holy Spirit.

ANOTHER COMFORTER

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever. John 14:16 (KJV)

THE REALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The reality of the existence of Jesus Christ is not just embraced by the church but the world also; in fact, Jesus is a historic figure in human history. Those who hold any arguments at all about Jesus do not deny His existence but doubt some other misunderstood facts about Him. But the subject of the Holy Spirit is in more doubt and yet, the Holy Spirit is just as real as Jesus. Kathryn Kuhlman said, 'Jesus is God's gift to the world but the Holy Spirit is His gift to the church'. Is it not sad that the world has accepted their gift more than the church has accepted her gift? May God help us to embrace the Holy Spirit more than we have done.

JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT COMPARED

1. EXISTENCE BEFORE TIME

JESUS existed in eternity before He came into time (this physical world).

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
(John 1:1,14; Rev. 19:13; 1:8,11; John 8:23)

HOLY SPIRIT existed before He came into time (this physical world).

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Gen. 1:2

2. PROPHESIED ABOUT

JESUS’ coming was foretold by prophets and angels.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

(Isaiah. 9:6-7; Luke 2:30-33)

HOLY SPIRIT’S coming was foretold by Jesus and other prophets.

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18 ¶ I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel John 14:16-18; 16:7,13; Joel 2:28; Acts 2:14-16

3. IN TIME

JESUS came here at the appointed time

But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law Gal. 4:4

HOLY SPIRIT came here at the appointed time

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) John 7:37-39

4. LIMITED TIME ON EARTH

JESUS had a time frame within which to carry out His mission.

I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. John 9:4

HOLY SPIRIT has a timeline for His mission.

And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 2Thess. 2:6-7

5. FORM

JESUS came in human form

Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Heb. 2:14; Phil. 2:7-8

HOLY SPIRIT maintained His spirit form in His coming on earth though He abides in the body of Christ on the earth(the church)

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.1Cor. 6:19; Acts 2:1-4

6. MISSION

JESUS’ mission was to pay the penalty of man’s sin

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 3:17

HOLY SPIRIT came to impart the life and nature of God into man’s spirit.

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. John 3:8

7. ASCENSION

JESUS returned to the father when he finished his mission.

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

4 ¶ And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. John 14:1-4

HOLY SPIRIT will return to the father when He finished His task.

And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 2Thess. 2:6-7

8. EXTENT OF MINISTRY

JESUS’ earthly ministry was localized (could be at only one place on the earth at a time)

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Acts 10:38

HOLY SPIRIT is not.

And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. Revelation 5:6 ¶

9. CURRENT INTERCESSION MISSION

JESUS is currently at the right side of the father in heaven making intercession for us to submit to the comforting ministry of the Holy Spirit

Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Rom. 8:34

HOLY SPIRIT is presently with us on the earth making intercession for us through us and other believers to look more like Christ.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Rom. 8:26

10. SELFLESSNESS

JESUS came to reveal the Father.

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. John 14:9-11

HOLY SPIRIT came to reveal Jesus.

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. John 16:14

Whose task is it to reveal the Holy Spirit? This is your task. He has no physical body but yours. Dedicate your life to Him and allow Him to flow through you like Kathryn Kuhlman and Benny Hinn and ultimately as Jesus did.
